Important Signs that Indicate It’s Time to Have Your Septic Tank Pumped

For years the common consensus on septic tank maintenance was “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” Fortunately, this consensus is mostly extinct, although confusion as to proper septic system maintenance is still widespread. Here are a few tips to help you know when it is time to have your septic tank pumped:

  • If it’s been a few years since you last had your tank pumped, then you should put this on your to-do list. Homeowners should generally have their system pumped every 3 to 5 years, even if it appears to be working fine. Some alternative systems that are more complex may need pumping more frequently. Every system is different. What is right for your system may not be right for your neighbor’s!
  • Are your toilets flushing slower than they should? Does your shower drain go down slowly? Do you hear gurgling noises in drains throughout the house when water is used? These are all signs that your system may be struggling to take water, or that a line leaving the house may be partially blocked. AKA: your system may need some attention.
  • Do you have soft spots in your drain field or sand mound? Standing water? These are both signs of a failing system. You should have your tank pumped as soon as possible!
  • Is your septic alarm system sounding off? Flashing red lights? Don’t turn off the buzzer and hope for the best! These are all signs of issues with your sewage pump in your dosing tank! Your system needs attention!

Proper maintenance is crucial to ensure that your septic system continues to operate properly for years to come.
